Since the city finally cooled to 89 degrees, I felt I could venture out of the house for a much-desired special snack. Bahn Mi is my most favorite sandwich, and I’ve been thinking about them nonstop since Nathan Miller’s announcement that he would be travelling in Vietnam for two weeks in August. When I was toodling around Vietnam in 2001, I ate them every day. The crunchy, salty, sweet, spicy, savory combination of pork, daikon, pork, cucumber, pork, carrots, pork, cilantro, pork and hot peppers on a fresh baguette is pure sandwich heaven! A 40 minute subway ride is a small price to pay to enjoy such riches! There are fine Bahn Mi to be had in the not-so-nearby section of Queens known as Flushing. It’s an incredibly large and ethnically diverse neighborhood–Chinese, Korean, South Asian, SE Asian, Philipino and Latin Americans are all represented there. Flushing’s Chinese population apparently surpasses that of Chinatown.

When some people hear the phrase “Main Street, USA”, it evokes a quaint avenue that runs through the center of town, complete with a General Store, a Mom & Pop Cafe, and lined with big oak trees. Or maybe it makes them think of Disneyworld. When I hear “Main Street” my thoughts turn to Twice-Cooked Pork, DanDan Noodles, 24 Hour Korean Barbeque, outrageously cheap and fresh produce, refreshing and chewy Bubble Tea, and a whole mess of retail signage that I can’t decipher. And, of course, Bahn Mi.

I love Main Street.

My taste buds actually watered when I saw you eating. There isn’t any Bahn Mi restaurants in my area. Why did you do this to me? WHY!?

Can I say your editing on this was cute without that being condescending? Because I definitely mean the former and definitely do not mean the latter. YUM!

    I want one now…

    Lee’s Sandwiches is open 24 hours around here… maybe…

I wonder what Nathan Miller or Vu Bui has to say about eating them in Vietnam?

I totally know that feeling!!! I am so glad you got that sandwich. I guess it has that effect on people. I like how you went all out and had the Boba to go with it. Very interesting-to-enjoy video, as always. :)

I was going to ask — no McDonald’s in your neighborhood? — but then I read the ingredients of a Bahn Mi and think I need to find me a Vietnamese restaurant!

I’m more of a pho man myself, but I can relate! I did find that cat paw a little creepy. Of course, I like creepy.

You probably spent more money on gas than on the sandwich. I hope it was really good!

I am having a great time here in Saigon…the city is full of life, perhaps too full as I am having trouble deciding to do a trip inside my trip…Heading to Hong Kong on Thursday…that is an absolute, however a short trip to Cambodia might happen…anyhow…will peep the video when I can find a PC that has a real internet connect…

Rob, pho is my second favorite food group, the first being ‘bacon’!

Nathan! I’m glad you’re likeing Vietnam…I bet your Bahn Mi was five times fresher and one-fifth the cost of mine!

That video made me very happy! (And thankfully I just ate a large meal, so I didn’t get TOO jealous) And I loved that little map! SANDWICH!

I’ll be in NYC for a few weeks in Sept. I shall have to pick me up one of those. The sandwich and the map!

i love travel shows that i can replicate the day i see them if i want to. :-)

i too was wondering about the suspiciously inanimate cat’s leg between your bubble tea cup and your sandwich.

You’re my kind of people! I would most definitely travel that distance or farther to consume a delicious sandwich - hands down one of the greatest culinary creations of all time.
