Wisdom

February 4, 2008 | Filed under: misadventures

I was one of those lucky ducks who grew up with none of her wisdom teeth impacted. Nope, not me! Four perfectly formed 3rd molars popped up by the time I was 22, plenty of room for everybody, no pain, no shifting. Two years ago, though, I got a cavity in one of those chompers and my dentist recommended that he pull it, but having somewhat lame dental coverage for extractions I begged him to fill it instead. He agreed, but warned me that since it was difficult to reach back there with a toothbrush the day would surely come where I’d get another cavity eventually and then only pulling would do.

Today was that day.

And since the troubled tooth was on the bottom, it’s upper twin would have to go, as well.

I’m almost ridiculously healthy. I realized that this was pretty much the most surgical thing that’s ever happened to me. I’ve never been one to fear the dentist (I’ve had 12 fillings in my lifetime, not that I’m proud of it, just to say that I’ve spent considerable time at the dentist) but I was overwhelmed once I got in that chair. Totally overwhelmed. I kind of freaked out.

The dentist was very kind and totally patient with me.

I’m glad it’s over, and I promise to brush extra, extra carefully on the other side so I don’t have to go through this again.

Man! You are so right, do NOT ask anyone how it went for them. Ever! I had my lower wisdom teeth extracted, but they left the upper ones. I finally got a cavity in one of them and just had it filled with no problem. There was no mention of removal if it happened again. So now I’m gonna brush extra carefully back there too! Hang in, sweetie. You’re okay. You’ll be okay. Call in sick tomorrow anyway. Awesome video of this, lady. How often do I get to hear you, all drugged up, saying “I like valium!” and “I’m so HIGH!” ?? Hilariousness!

    You poor adorable thing!

I had all four taken out at once. I was whistling on my way out of the office and was eating that evening. Some people just have it all…

I’m sorry you are in pain, but I gotta tell you, I laughed out loud at this video. It was kind of a nervous laugh, partially brought on by the memory of having all four pulled in my early 20’s. Yikes! (I actually went back to work both times…they pulled two at a time.) That cracking sound is the worst.

I felt so bad for you at the end, when you were poking at that stiffness around your mouth. It’s a tough surgery to battle pain with. I will pray for your head, for two obvious reasons. :) Hope it passes quickly!

Thanks, folks. No one feel bad for laughing, my fiancee laughed, too!.

It sounds like Michael had the easiest time of it. But why-oh-why did my dentist make me take out bothe when Cheryl’s denist didn’t? We may never know.

    New Kingston in the hizzouse!

Karen, that cracking sound is what sent me into freak-out land. I screamed (as loud as one can when their mouth is wide open with someone else’s hands and implements of destruction in it), burst into tears and nearly jumped out of that chair. I was damn enar hysterical for about half a minute. I never want to hear that sound again. I had nightmares about it last night.

Oh, dear, dear Bonny! I thought of you THE WHOLE TIME! I kept thinking of the pictures of you after yours were taken out and I thought (filled with hope) “well, she’s smiling under all the swelling, so maybe she’s not in too much pain!”. You, madame, are a real, real trooper. You are my Wisdom Tooth Hero.

Bek, have some macaroni and cheese and apple sauce. Helps every time you have dental work.

I’m with Michael T. on this one. I got all 4 at once, and it was a cinch. Valium is key. I was so high that the smoke coming from my mouth due to intense drilling didn’t even bother me, and all I can remember is asking to see my teeth at the end. He had already chucked them. Darn!

“I’ve known pain. I’ve had pain.” You said that with such seriousness and determination. Love it!

If they weren’t going to put you all the way under, not to give a pre-op Valium is malpractice in my book!

    I hope you’re feeling better!
